Boris and Barak break Congestion and Cigs codes

obama_smoking%20copy.jpg boris-johnson-bike_667500n.jpg
Proof that our newer political leaders are not without fault is not necessarily a bad thing – as long as they progress fairly slowly to being our older political leaders riddled with them.
It was only in November that Mayor Boris pledged “’a fair approach to all road users, including an end to the punishment of motorists when they have no alternative to the car”. Unfortunately he didn’t end the ‘punishment’ quickly enough and has had to pay a fine of £60 after forgetting to pay the London Congestion Charge whilst on his way to Trafalgar Square to light up Christmas decorations.
And as we wait for Barak Obama to take up his presidential reign – gained in part by his steely nerve and great speech voice – we hear he can’t quite manage to kick the cigarettes despite years of trying. Speculation abounds regarding what would happen to that that steely nerve and persuasive voice if he does abandon the weed. Worse, what happens when all the kids who have been encouraged to see Obama as the new hero of America take up smoking claiming ‘Obama does it’?
Does all this presage a new ‘cool’ under which smoking and private car usage in our cities can thrive again? Oh alright, I’m stretching things too far again.
Despite Boris and Barak’s examples it is more likely that we will soon be fined for using the word ‘cigarette’ and forced to cycle around our cities with private motoring allowed (through car leasing not ownership) only between centres of population.

A new market for car sales?

    29041275.jpg
As car sales plummet worldwide we need to find a way to expand the market for new cars. How about reducing the driving age to 12? Think how many additional cars could be sold to all these kids.
In order to get them ready, Mercedes Benz World will give them 60 minutes professional training for just £68. In fact you can start them younger as long as they can reach the pedals. Once passed the introductory session they can move on to the main circuits to be taught skid management and dynamic handling.
Word of warning though. Just suppose you help your kid develop great car skills at 12 years old and then you rush out and buy him or her a nice Mercedes coupe only to find they don’t lower the driving age. You have six years of moaning misery to face – but you could earn a bit through car leasing!

Skycar inventor: “Even if we sell 20 we’ll be laughing.” Mmm…

      In_Gear_427862a.jpg
Gilo Cardoza has built a car that really flies after dreaming about it since he was a little boy.
Fully road-legal – the car passed the government’s single vehicle approval test last month – and designed to run on bioethanol, Cardozo’s Skycar is powered by a modified 140bhp Yamaha R1 superbike engine with a lightweight automatic CVT (continuously variable transmission) gear-box from a snowmobile. It boasts Ferrari-beating acceleration on land, an air speed of up to 80mph and can swap between road and flight modes in minutes.
Here’s how to get from road to air in the Skycar:-
“The driver unpacks the parafoil wing from the boot and manually deploys it from the rear of the car. He switches the transmission from road mode, which drives the wheels, to flight mode, which powers the rear fan
The fan’s thrust pushes the car forward, providing lift for the wing as the car reaches 35mph – takeoff speed. Once airborne, pedals in the footwell steer the Skycar by pulling cables that change the wing’s shape
The Skycar has a flying range of about 180 miles. If the wing is damaged or collapses, the pilot can fire a roof-mounted emergency parachute that allows the car to float safely back to earth”.
      VITAL STATISTICS
      ENGINE 1000cc, four cylinders
      POWER 140bhp
RANGE 180 miles (flight) / 250 miles (road)
      CRUISING ALTITUDE 2,000-3,000ft
      MAXIMUM ALTITUDE 15,000ft
      ACCELERATION 0-60mph: 4.5sec (on road)
      TOP SPEED 80mph (flight) / 110mph (road)
      COST £35,000
Car leasing rates have yet to be announced.

Bacon butties and Bentleys and a Grand day out

        butties.jpg bently3.jpg cash.jpg
Here’s how it works; you turn up in leafy Oxfordshire, slap your £995 on the table and you get a bacon butty breakfast. But there’s more.
Butties scoffed and greasy hands made spotless (and I do mean spotless), you get the keys to your Bentley – or your Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Audi or Porsche. No you don’t have to choose, you get to drive them all…for an hour each.
The day is run and hosted by dreamcarhire.com and is a more relaxed variation on the expensive supercar clubs. The cars carry pre-programmed satnavs which take you over a 200 mile route that meanders through picturesque Cotswold scenery. You need to arrive at each changeover point on time so you get around one hour in each car.
You used to be able to buy a house for the price of one of these exotic autos (now of course you can buy two) so getting to drive six for under a grand may seem reasonable. But it’s a high price for what is the shortest car leasing period ever. Still fancy it though.
