Car leasing – an increasingly popular alternative to ownership

The proportion of people choosing to lease a car rather than buy is increasing rapidly. One car leasing company claims that the ratio of its business four years ago, which was 70% business lease versus 30% private lease, has now reversed.
It’s easy to see the attraction. No more worries about depreciation, which bites hard the moment you take delivery of your new car purchase. This can knock a staggering 70% off what you paid in just 3 years. No hassle either when it comes time to resell.
So how does leasing stand up to buying financially?
A recent Times online evaluation suggested it was pretty even on a £17K new car over three years. Although the outright purchase example saved £300, the monthly payments were over £145 higher. On shorter deals the comparison is likely to swing in favour of leasing. In addition, people who use their car purely for business and are Vat-registered can reclaim the tax on the agreement. That sometimes tips the balance in favour of leasing.
If you’re tempted to consider car leasing be sure to check out terms such as the annual mileage agreement, what your leasing company means by ‘wear and tear’, what happens on early termination, and make sure you choose a lease that does not exceed the warranty period of the car.
If you’re satisfied on these points then leasing may be the way forward for you.

At last, an everyday Ferrari

Ferrari claims that it’s new California model is one you can use every day. Isn’t that what every very- rich, supercar-loving buyer has been waiting for? A car you can take to the supermarket and fill with groceries.
But, to be fair, Ferrari has made a very desirable and sexy car that you could do that with – if you really wanted to. It has an automatic gearbox, and engine at the front and a metal folding roof. The words ‘Enzio’, ‘grave’ and ‘turning’ spring to mind.
Under the bonnet lies a 453bhp 4.3 litre engine that is almost identical to the one driving the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. Inside you are wrapped in hand-stitched leather, and outside you are wrapped in graded aluminium covered with eight coats of paint and lacquer.
Shape-wise this is a beautiful rather than aggressive design, the aerodynamic wedge having given way to the curvaceously seductive.
Speaking of the loss of what may be seen as ‘purity’ someone said ‘The Times crossword just got easier’. Bad news for addicts of The Times crossword but good news for those who could never quite manage it.
With a conventional front engine, space for golf clubs (or shopping) and a softer shape this is a big gamble for Ferrari – it’s biggest since Enzo Ferrari told a customer called Ferruccio Lamborghini to go and build his own cars instead of complaining.
Definitely one for the luxury car leasing market

The 500 by DIESEL – only available online

A special edition version of Fiat’s popular 500 city car has gone on sale exclusively through the Internet.
The 500byDIESEL is a collaboration between Fiat’s Turin Style Centre and fashion label DIESEL’s design team. This new version of the award winning car is only available for order through the internet where a fully automated process allows customers to configure a car, pay a deposit, order it direct from the factory, track the car’s progress, make a final payment and liaise with a geographically appropriate dealer about collecting the new vehicle .
Based on a Fiat 500 Sport version, the 500byDIESEL comes in metallic green, black or brown. The exterior features 16-inch alloy wheels with the DIESEL logo, brake callipers painted yellow (an option only on the 100 bhp 1.4 version), unique side trim with DIESEL wording, and special door mirror fairings.
Inside, there’s special upholstery in denim fabric. The label logo also appears on the instrument panel and gear knob, while a special pouch, reminiscent of the fifth pocket on DIESEL jeans, appears on the side of the front seats. Prices start at £11,150 for outright purchase and car leasing costs should be competitive.

Paris Hilton (star of US reality show ‘Simple Life’) has bought herself a $200,000 customised pink Bentley Continental GT for Christmas.
After buying the luxury car, she took it to a remodelling firm in Los Angeles, which is famous for customising cars in MTV makeover show Pimp My Ride got her car sprayed with a specific shade of cherry blossom pink, which was complimented by pink sheet metal, grille, hubcaps and most of the interior.
“I brought this pink clock from the Disney store and got him to make this exact colour and we just designed it all together. I love it, it’s so pretty. I’ve just always wanted a pink car,” Hilton said.
“I think when you’re a little girl and you have the Barbie corvette you’re like, ‘I wish I had a car like this one.’” she added.
Meanwhile a burglar stole $1.3m of jewellery from Hilton’s L.A. mansion. I am put in mind of a scene long ago from TV’s Thunderbirds. Loyal cockney chauffeur Parker allows himself a quiet smile as he swings the vast pink limousine across the gravelled drive and away from Lady Penelope’s mansion…
